Email Shares 52 We get a lot of questions on our electric wiring articles from folks tackling electrical projects in their own home. One of the most common and intimidating parts of electrical work is dealing with the main breaker panel. This article provides an overview of a breaker panel. Some jurisdictions require you to be an electrician to perform any electrical work, even in your own home.
Almost all jurisdictions require you to get a permit to complete any substantial electric work beyond simple tasks like replacing receptacles. Electric Breaker Panel Volts and Amps Before we get started on the panel, note that virtually all homes in the United States are wired with amps volt service. For homes equipped with natural gas, propane, or oil heat, amps volts is usually enough to meet electric demands throughout the year.
For homes with an all-electric heat system, amps is the minimum recommended service level.

I actually had no idea it was here. I’ve got a weird question that I think someone on here would know. I’m trying to get the correct wiring setup so when the inspector comes, he won’t fail my setup. I don’t expect he will check the generator cable, but I’d still like to ensure it’s setup correctly for my own safety.
In this video, This Old House host Kevin O’Connor explains how to install a stand-by generator. Steps: 1 Install electrical sub-panel with transfer switch beside the main electrical panel. 2 Redirect critical circuits from main panel to sub-panel.
What we did know was that we didn’t want to spend a bunch of money on a battery and solar system until we lived the lifestyle awhile. It took us two years on the road to determine we wanted to upgrade to an electrical system that would allow us to live for about a week at a time two weeks at most without electrical hook-ups. It was never our intent to be serious boondockers, but it takes a pretty good system even to make it a week without having to be really conservative.
We have no problem conserving, but the less we have to do, the better. We knew we could easily hang out for a week on our holding tanks and our fresh water capacity, but our pitiful single house battery was just not cutting it. And we certainly didn’t want to run our generator all the time. So we made the decision to phase-in our electrical upgrade. Let’s begin the discussion of the details including our costs. If you, like us in the beginning, know nothing about RV electrical systems, perhaps it would be best to read through our RV Electrical Systems page before trudging through this page.
In The Beginning We’ll start with our set-up from the beginning and work through our modifications. We ordered our fifth wheel with the generator option.

Preparations In this case, the power was controlled by a amp breaker on the main breaker panel. I turned off the breaker. Then I removed the cover from the sub-panel that was getting a new circuit breaker. This situation is a little different from most houses. This house has a amp main breaker panel, which feeds 3 subsidiary breaker panels. This is a good technique for house wiring, although it does cost a little more. This method allowed me to shut off the power at the main panel, so the amp sub-panel had no live wires anywhere.
But there was still power to some parts of the house. Most houses have just one panel, which contains the main breaker typically to amps and a large collection of single pole volt and double-pole volt breakers. In these cases, installing a breaker can be done safely, BUT There are still live wires present. The big wires that enter the panel and feed the main breaker. Avoiding contact with these wires is very important. Worse would be accidentally shorting the service entrance wires with a metal tool, because they have a huge current capacity, and short-circuiting these wires would create a massive arc, like a big industrial welder, which would continue until something in the circuit was melted.
The neutral white and the bare ground wire MUST be on there designated connection. In the diagram above the bare ground is indicated by a green line. The bare wire should also be grounded to the electrical box if metallic. Be sure to use the properly rated electrical box designed to be used with a dryer receptacle.
For a basic project in zip code with 1 sub-panel, the cost to Install an Electrical Sub-Panel starts at $1, – $1, per sub-panel. Actual costs will depend on job size, conditions, size options.
Supplies Gather your supplies. For the sake of this build we are going to assume you have a 30 amp plug on your generator – like the one shown. If your have one different please adjust your supplies. Buy a UL rated device that fits your specific breaker box. These have been tested and validated to work. Many insurance companies and jurisdictions require the UL rating. Again you will need to buy one that fits your breaker box.
